Equipment cost vs. install cost — the actual breakdown
For a representative Coeur d'Alene half-acre install in 2026, here's roughly how the numbers come apart:
Equipment. A Navimow i2 lands around $2,000-2,400 depending on configuration. A Navimow X3 with AWD is in the $3,200-3,800 range. The Kress RTKn series starts around $3,500 and goes up to about $5,500 for the larger-capacity unit with AWD wheel kit. Reference station hardware (when needed for RTK accuracy outside good cellular coverage) adds $400-700.
Site survey and design. Included in our free consult. This is where most online buyers underestimate the work — a poorly placed dock or a missed canopy gap costs you in performance and battery cycles for the life of the mower.
Install labor. Typical install runs $400-900 depending on perimeter complexity, dock siting, and whether we're trenching for power. Most installs we do are same-day. Properties with a long power run to the dock location, hardscape penetrations, or multi-zone setups push the upper end.
Reference station mount (RTK installs). If you're under canopy or in a satellite-shadowed area, a roof-mounted or pole-mounted RTK reference station adds $300-600 in materials and labor. This is the piece online buyers don't even know to ask about.
First-season service. We include a check-in visit at the 6-week mark and a blade swap at end of season for the first year. That's a $250 value we fold into the install rather than break out.
Add it up for that half-acre Coeur d'Alene example: Navimow X3 install lands around $4,400-4,900 all-in. Same property with a Navimow i2 (no AWD, simpler install, no reference station needed): around $2,900-3,300.
Why "cheap online" stops being cheap
You can buy a Navimow direct from a few online retailers for less than our install price — sometimes 10-15% less on the equipment alone. We tell people this openly because most of them eventually find the listings. What they don't see in the price is what happens twelve months later when the mower throws a fault code.
A Navimow or Kress purchased through an authorized dealer comes with the full manufacturer warranty and a local servicing relationship. When something goes sideways — a sensor faults, a wheel motor needs replacement, the RTK module loses calibration — we handle it. Often same-week, sometimes same-day.
A unit purchased from an out-of-state online retailer technically has the same warranty, but you're shipping the mower to a depot for repair, often in another state. Two to four weeks down during mowing season. We've inherited a few of these as orphans — customers who bought online, hit a fault, and called us because we're the nearest authorized service. We help where we can, but warranty-wise it's a longer road.
There's also the install quality piece. We've redone two installs in the past year where the original (DIY, online purchase) had the dock placed in a spot that lost signal under summer canopy, forcing the mower into constant search-and-recover behavior that ate batteries and cut effective mowing time in half. Equipment was fine. Install was the failure point.
Ongoing costs you should actually plan for
Blades. Real number: $40-90 per blade set per season for residential properties. A typical Navimow or Kress runs a set of three small razor-style blades that swap in 90 seconds. Most homeowners do one set per season; heavier-use or pine-needle-prone lots run two.
Battery replacement. Lithium packs last 5-7 years in PNW conditions with proper winter storage. Replacement is $300-500 when the time comes — far less than the unit cost.
Annual service visit (optional). We offer a $185 spring tune that includes sensor calibration check, firmware update, blade swap, dock inspection, and perimeter signal verification. Most customers take it. Some don't and do fine.
Connectivity. Some models use cellular for RTK corrections. Navimow includes data for the first year then it's roughly $5-8/month after. Kress varies by configuration.
Plan for roughly $150-300/year in consumables and connectivity after year one, plus the optional service visit if you take it.
Where the dollar logic breaks down
A robot mower install doesn't pencil on equipment cost alone for properties under about a quarter acre — if you're paying someone $40-60 a week to mow, your payback is around 5-7 years on the cheaper units, longer on the AWD models. The math works on bigger lots, on properties where you're currently paying a lawn service $80-120 per visit, and on properties where you (the owner) value the time back.
It also stops penciling when the property has so much pine, slope, or zone complexity that the install cost balloons. We'll tell you when we see that during the walk.

We quote flat-rate, all-in, after the on-site walk — no surprise line items, no "we found something" calls mid-install.
